6 Reasons You Should Care About What Sunscreen and Bug Spray You Use

badger-collage-title

After what felt like an exhausting winter, summertime is FINALLY here in full swing! We have had one full week of bright, sunny, 80 degree days. We’ve hit the beach, swam in the pond, gone for hikes and bike rides, and enjoyed days at the pool. We are wholeheartedly embracing summer.

I learned my lesson last year as I scrambled to find information on safe and healthy options for my family when it came to sunscreen and protecting us from the bugs. This year, I stocked up early…on our favortie brand. Badger. (You can read my review from last year here.)

When it comes to choosing organic, we do the best we can. Sunscreen and bug spray are decisions that can be made in advance and things that you don’t buy on a whim. Looking at the information and making an informed decision is something that is important. Below are my thoughts and the reasons why we have made the decision to use Badger Balm Sunscreen and Bugspray.

  • Protection is not compromised. I often hear complaints about sunscreens not providing enough coverage and little ones still getting too much sun. We have been using this sunscreen for a long time and I can tell you, even on the strongest of sunny beach days, the Badger Sunscreen Creams work like a charm.
  • You can see where you have applied. So maybe this isn’t exactly a reason why you should care about what sunscreen or bugspray you use, but it is a reason I use the brand that I do:) Badger sunscreen creams (which is what we use because they are water resistant) are fairly white. When not rubbed in well, it can have a ghostly effect. :) The plus side of this is that it makes it easy to see where you have and have not applied sunscreen! And for the record, when rubbed in, you don’t notice the white.
  • Broad Spectrum is a must. The mineral zinc oxide in Badger sunscreens sits on top of your skin absorbing UVA and UVB rays before it reaches cells. This is the ONLY active ingredient in the sunscreen. SPF is only a measure of how well a sunscreen protects from sunburn, caused by UVB rays. The US and Canada only require that sunscreens have this protection in it. Badger goes one step further offerning protection from UVA rays as well which are the rays that can cause cellular damage and lead to cancer.
  • All natural and certified organic base. The other ingredients in Badger’s sunscreens and bugsprays are soothing to the skin. And…they smell nice too;) My favorite scent – the lavender.
  • No DEET. Not an issue for sunscreens, but as far as bug repellents go, you have to be careful with this one. DEET is an oil developed by the US Army. It has been seen as a successful way to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and other bugs. BUT in doing so, has also been known to cause neurological issues, severe skin reactions, and even in some cases cancer. Um…no thank you. Badger uses a combination of all natural essential oils to repel insects. The boys used it fishing in the woods just the other weekend.
  • No chemicals and all natural ingredients means no toxic ingredients for the Earth. Sunscreen and bug spray chemicals end up in our water supply, in the soil, and other places other than just our skin. They aren’t good for the Earth.

We have been using Badger products for years and they are what we will continue to use.

I love the sunscreen creams for the beach, pool, and all other water based activities because of its water resistance.

As far as bug sprays go, this spray repellent is a perfect 2.7 ounces, which makes it GREAT for traveling on planes. 😉 I also like the bug balm which comes in a stick making it easy to apply to wrists and other small areas that are exposed.

Now, Badger makes an After Sun Balm. I must say, we have yet to use it for its intended use which is after sun exposure. BUT…the other day, G got a burn on his back from the hot slide outside of our temporary apartment. The normal bandaid and letting it air out wasn’t doing the trick. I figured with all natural ingredients and oils, it couldn’t hurt to try the After Sun Balm on it. Miracle. Within 3 days, it was totally cleared up. Heck, LOVE this use!

Next year…the Rose Facial Sunscreen Lotion comes out and it is totally on my radar. I love their rose products.

  2. For me it is that the sunscreen works on sensitive skin and doesn’t “sting”! Both of my kids have sensitive skin and are easily irritated by harsher sunscreens.

I would say 5 years ago I sent for information to present to the company I was associated with and responded with a very enthusiastic welcome and samples, and I was in love. But as a Jr buyer, my opinion didn’t change their minds unfortunately. However, since that introduction, I seek your products out and am happy to see them at more and more stores. The non-nano zinc is the selling point in my personal story..Thanks for being successful!!
