DIY Paint Your Own Throw Pillow

finished pillow-title

So you all know by now that I love a good DIY project. Of course, they are never ending here at this house! The first thing that we did when we moved into our home in MA was paint our bedroom. I needed a nice clean space to call my own. Now that it (and the 5 million coats on the teal trim) have been painted, we are ready to “decorate”. I always struggle with this part because I feel like it is such a big deal. Often I know in my head what I want but recreating that image is a different story. :)

One of the things I know is that there will be a reading nook. We have this odd corner in the room that would perfectly fit a chair. It is by the window so the lighting is perfect and so is the feel. Of course on this chair I picture a pillow. A gorgeous patterned pillow that brings out the colors in the space and adds a little creativity at the same time.

Cutting Edge Stencils has long been a go to of mine when it comes to adding fun design elements.

In our last home I stenciled one wall in our renovated bathroom. It was … perfect. <–so perfect that the couple that bought our home pointed it out as something that they loved during walk through. You can see it HERE.

Then, when it came to decorating the walls of my office in our old home, I decided on a gorgeous teal-ish paint color with orange accents and went to town with a stencil on a canvas. Again, perfection! See it HERE.

And so now, this pillow. The one that is perfect in my mind. Cutting Edge is solving that problem too. I decided to Paint-A-Pillow.

I headed over to the website and as I browed the many options they had I found myself at first overwhelmed but then when I saw how customizable everything was (you could choose pillow color, paint colors, embellishments, adding extra stencils), I began to get excited. I have to say, I toyed with the idea of the chicken at first. I then decided it didn’t go perfectly with our bedroom ideas BUT don’t worry, you will see the chicken at some point! Instead, I chose Antico!

The kit arrived and I was expecting a set up and whole day (in steps) project.

Instead, what unraveled was a project that was more than a joy and one that I can find not a single flaw with.

The box opened up to the stencil already in place over the pillow cover held in by gold tabs. And there was an accessory box filled with paint, a roller, stencil brush, fabric swatch, and tray. No set up required. It was all right there including the 17×17 pillow on which to put the natural canvas cover. Oh and of course, step by step hints and instructions.

Of course my plan was to paint the pillow gray- which by the way is an amazing quality pillow. But when I layed eyes on the teal that I had ordered I decided to mix the Jacquard paints together and see what we got. The color that resulted was the perfect accent color for our room.

I got started painting and got on a roll. The entire process start to finish took me under 30 minutes. Talk about a quick DIY.

After I finished the first case, I simply attached the second one (all ready to go with the cardboard inserted) into the stencil base. When I finished I allowed the cases to dry.

I then put the covers onto the pillows. The cardboard was removed from the inside and it was an easy hidden zipper to close. The pillows really are high quality and gorgeous! I just LOVE how the paint is softer so there is no hard crunchy feel on it.

Originally I had intended to embellish it with fabulous tassles. But, I decided to sit on it for a bit and see if I like it plain or with them. You can see all of the embellishments they have to offer here. They really dress up the pillow!

So of course now I have like a million ideas for this. It is one of the most fun (and simple) DIY projects I have ever done. Imagine a baby shower gift for a rocking chair. A wedding gift for a lovely couple. A teacher’s gift for her chair in her classroom. The opportunities are endless with this one! Oh and stay tuned for the chicken. It will be coming!

Here’s a video if you don’t believe me OR if you just want to see the pillow creation kit in action! And make sure to scroll down to enter to win a kit of your own!

**Disclosure: I was provided with a Paint A Pillow Kit to review as well as one to giveaway. This really is an absolutely amazing product that would make a perfect gift or even just satisfy the DIYer in you. All opinions are my own!
