Creating the Epic Thanksgiving Celebration – Part 1: The Food

Thanksgiving-2-1

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Period.

For the last few years I have reclaimed it and we celebrate it at our house. I LOVE cooking a turkey. I LOVE having family over. I LOVE that it is brisk and fall-ish outside. I LOVE the colors (orange of course:) I LOVE Thanksgiving!

This year I thought I would walk you through some of the things that you will see at my house this holiday (with the exception of a whole bunch of people that are thankful that we can all be together)! Maybe it will spark some ideas for your table:)

Appetizers:

Bacon Jam Bruschetta with Apple Slaw by David Venable

itkwd-5

We had this delicious appetizer while I was at QVC last month and immediately knew it would be perfect for my Thanksgiving! I plan on making extra bacon jam to give each family as a little take away along with their Thanksgiving leftovers. The perfect party favor, don’t you think?

Cheese Plate

Of course, I am obsessed with cheese so this will be set out for everyone to enjoy while we are chatting! Some Kerrygold, some local cheeses…YUM!

Jalapeno Cranberry Baked Brie

This is a favorite in our house and usually ends up as an appetizer;)

Drinks:

Ummm, just look at this Apple Cider Sangria from How Sweet It Is. This will be what is served at out gathering! Enough said.

The Main Dish:

Thanksgiving

We have turkey in our house. For the last 4 years I have gotten a turkey from Woodsong Hollow Farm in Boyertown, PA. It is a local, organically raised bird and it is delicious! I generally get anywhere from a 20-24 pound turkey and we eat it all between Thanksgiving and the days after. My dad always helps clean, prep, and baste the turkey. It is a team effort:) As far as recipes go, I have only used one. It is the Perfect Roast Turkey!

Side Dishes:

There are always way too many of these. BUT, I am SO not complaining because really, isn’t that part of the fun of Thanksgiving? All of those side dishes?

I leave the stuffing up to my mom every year because, well, she just rocks at stuffing.

I definitely take care of the veggies, especially the mashed potatoes :) Those are my fav!

Here are some others:

Shredded Brussels Sprouts Recipe

I love this take on traditional Brussels sprouts! We will be trying this recipe this year.

Sweet Potato Cornbread

I am not a huge sweet potato (like everyone knows sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving) fan so this bread is perfect! A little touch of the veggie, but not too much:)

Slow Cooker Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry-Sauce-rfrd

My neighbor has ALWAYS been kind enough to give us some of her homemade cranberry relish every year. We swap out sides:) BUT, she moved away this past year and so for the cranberry side this year, I am on my own. Annemarie from Real Food Real Deals shared her slow cooker recipe. It sounds like the perfect one for us!

Thanksgiving Kale Salad (from Heather Christo)

This looks like the perfect alternative to your basic salad! YUM!

Last year I tried this Garlicky Smoked Rainbow Chard and it was delicious! If we get some in our share this year, I am all over it:)

Rolls….you can’t forget the rolls! I haven’t forgotten them, I am just holding out to share a special recipe with you all:)

Dessert:

Pumpkin Dip Topped with Marshmallows and Pecans

pumpkin-pie

This is a favorite around here! Super easy to snack on while drinking coffee and tea!

Pumpkin Pie and Gingersnap Shooters (from Souffle Bombay)

souffle

We had these last Thanksgiving and loved them! Not only were they adorable to look at, they tasted just as good too! Oh and bonus? Colleen tells you how to make your own pumpkin pie spice too.

And one last one…

Pumpkin Pie Bars

We all know I am a huge fan of bars as a dessert and these look amazing!

What are some of your favorite side dishes on Thanksgiving?

Make sure to follow my Thanksgiving Pinterest Board if you haven’t already for some more ideas about what to eat on this fabulous day of giving thanks!
