Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013

So, many blogs out there are doing “Year in Reviews” at this time of year. I love reading them and when I do, I often get to re-read some of my favorite blog posts written by other bloggers that I follow from the past year as well.

I thought about doing something of this sort myself, but realized shortly thereafter that I have only been blogging on The Vintage Mom for about 3 months. Yes, that’s all, 3 whole months (feels like much longer over here – in a good way). So instead, I am going to do sort of a reflection post about where I have been over the last year and where I hope to go.

The Vintage Mom may be a new blog, but I am not a new blogger. I have written many other blogs over the years that have come and gone into hibernation.

The first blog that I started was one titled Just Knitting Along. It was a blog I started in 2007 devoted to knitting. C was just born and I was revving up my knitting and really enjoyed writing about it and interacting on blogs with other knitters. The knitting social media community Ravelry had just started and between this new knitter’s paradise and my blog, I was able to accomplish this since I had just moved so far away from my beloved knitting group at The Lamb’s Wool. This blog slowly, over time, was converted into a general crafting blog and therefore I changed the title to Just Crafting Along to fit its genre better.

Next up was Realistic Saving. I started it in response to our family’s version of the “extreme couponing” craze. I wanted to adapt those unrealistic saving tactics to fit a normal person’s lifestyle. It was a great blog for me at the time, but was too hyper-focused on saving. I just can’t focus that well on that topic all the time. Part of the reason that I love blogging is because it is an outlet. Yes, I love to write, but what I love more is getting my thoughts out on paper and connecting with others through them. For that reason, Realistic Saving wasn’t for me.

About a year ago, I started thinking and decided that I wanted to blog about the kids. You see, I am a scrapbooker at heart, BUT my house at this moment and my life with three little ones does not leave much space or time for scrapbooking. I found that I had wonderful intentions of documenting their lives, but was not executing in the best way. So…along came The Terrific Three, a blog about my kids and their day-to-day goings on. It was the perfect compromise. It doesn’t mean that I will never scrap about their younger years, but, it releases the guilt that I have about it and allows me to make sure that those special moments are documented.

After posting on The Terrific Three, and finding that I wanted to include craft projects as well and other facets of our life, I started to think about building a blog that was all encompassing. {Enter The Vintage Mom.}

Though it has only been three months, the combination of writing about my family and our conversion to healthier eating and living, my crafty side, and my quest to become organized in my chaotic world, has meshed together perfectly. I have fallen in love with this new “space” that I have created. I have also found a love for interaction with others that share similar stories and thoughts.

So now, where will The Vintage Mom take me in 2013?

If you know me, you know that I am a very excitable person…VERY excitable.

I love to share my stories and experiences with others. I love to connect people to products, experiences, and ideas that work for me.

Also [stand back!] it may come as a surprise to my family and friends, but I am quirky and part of me has the desire to unleash these quirks on my blog. : -) So, if you aren’t up for quirkiness, run away very fast!

In 2013 I have a number of goals. A few of them pertain to blogging. Here they are:

  1. I hope to build more connections and continue to interact – I get that this seems obvious if you are on the “social” side of the fence, BUT I want to be clear, I am not setting numerical goals. I just want to make sure that real conversations are had on this blog and my social sites. I LOVE these conversations!
  2. I hope to continue to improve my writing and bring out more of that inner voice that I don’t hear every day – I am not a trained writer and so the art of putting my thoughts and ideas on paper is not something that comes extremely naturally to me.
  3. I hope to find my zone. I don’t have any intentions of becoming more niche-focused, because right now in my life, nothing is very focused :) and I blog about life. However, I do want to find some sort of rhyme or reason to my writing. As a type-A person, it is pretty difficult to always be so scattered, even on a blog!

And so, goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013. I can’t wait to look back next year and be able to read over how I have grown as a mom, how my children have grown, and how my family has grown, together!

Just for fun, here are my favorite posts from The Vintage Mom in 2012…

Oh man do I love this vegetable soup!

Finger knitting is something that C loves to do! She did a wonderful job with her “how-to” video.

 My favorite earring…a tutorial!

The Story That Our Christmas Tree Tells…one of my very favorite posts to write as it is full of stories and memories.

Head over to Musings of a Housewife and check out Jo-Lynne’s link up to read some more year in reviews for some really great blogs!
