Getting My Morning Refocused on My Home and Kids

A big welcome to Barb Hoyer from A Life in Balance for coming over today to blog on something I know I need a lot of help with…focusing! Read her great tips on focusing in the morning with kids and a list of things to do.

As a work-at-home mom, I’m constantly brimming with ideas, things to do, and people to contact. I used to feel like I needed to use the time in the morning while the kids were getting ready for school to get a head start on email and other little tasks for the day. However, I kept feeling like I was being pulled away from my work to remind my kids about their before school lists. On the other hand, I felt like I never got the daily housework done; it was always hovering, waiting for me to remember it.

Then I changed my morning focus. I stopped working on email, and started doing the daily cleaning. My daily cleaning list is pretty basic – wipe kitchen and bathroom counters down, sweeping the kitchen floor, and laundry, plus the weekly cleaning tasks like the trash, emptying the compost bin, and vacuuming. Most jobs take me about 5 minutes tops. Vacuuming takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on whether I vacuum around the edges of the first floor rooms.

All of these jobs take 5 minutes and can be interrupted at any time which makes me available mentally for my kids. I found something that required lower level thinking and matched it up with supervising my kids. Higher level thinking like emails need to be done when I’m not worried about interruptions.

As soon as my kids are ready for school, they help me out with the cleaning chores. If I’ve finished the daily and weekly cleaning jobs, I have the kids help me with one of my zone cleaning jobs such as wiping cabinets or wiping the baseboards.

Some mornings, I don’t get through the daily cleaning list much less get to the zone cleaning. That’s fine. I like to use my 5 minute cleaning tasks to give me a mental break from writing, or I wait until the kids are home from school and do the cleaning while the kids are doing their homework. They need me nearby and available, and I’m not sitting and waiting to help someone.

  1. It’s so hard to balance all the things I want/need to do first thing in the morning and still give my kids the attention they need first thing in the morning! I love these ideas! Planning for things I can be distracted from or they can even help with is a great way to start the day! Thanks!
