So, we are selling our house. We have been purging, decluttering, and organizing like crazy! Man it feels good.
Now that we have completely cleaned house, we are getting ready to sell. One thing that everyone always tells you is that neutral, less personalized pieces are best, so I went on a search to try to find some inexpensive art pieces that would fit in some of the rooms of our house. I found some good ones at Home Goods (one of my favorite places) and I had the kids each create one for their room.
I still had “the office” left and needed to find the perfect piece. So…I headed to one of my favorite stencil sites to browse around. Remember back in August when our sewer flooded:/? Well, one of the good things that came out of it was a brand new powder room. I used a Cutting Edge Stencil, to make an accent wall and I LOVE it. Knowing how easy these stencils are to use, I thought I would make some of my own DIY piced of art with one.
There were so many stencils that would be good for a piece of art to choose from. I loved the Dandelion Stencil and the Home is Where the Heart Is Quote, but in the end, I decided on Flock of Cranes! I seriously could not be more in love with how it turned out.
Supplies:
Flock of Cranes stencil (comes with a full stencil sheet as well as a single crane)
Stencil Essentials Kit *optional (I found the dense foam roller and stencil brush very helpful)
painter’s tape
paint (I used Sherwin Williams 6494 Lakeshore as well as White and Orange Acrylic Craft Paint)
canvas
Let’s Get Started:
1. Mix your paints (if needed). I chose Sherwin Williams color Lakeshore because this is the color of the wall that this piece of art will be hanging in. I wanted it to be a few shades lighter so I mixed in a bit of white. I also wanted one crane to be orange because it is an accent color that I love.
2. Prep your canvas and line up your stencil. I chose the kitchen table as my work surface because it was big enough to spread out. I taped the stencil over the canvas. The Flock of Cranes stencil isn’t uniform throughout. Not all of the cranes look the same and they are bunched in all different areas. I love the way it is asymmetrical!
3. Get rolling. One tip that I learned when I stenciled the bathroom wall was to roll the roller on a paper towel before rolling on your surface. It helps to get the extra paint off so that the look is even.
4. After I finished rolling I took the stencil off. I then took the single crane and placed it in the position that I chose. I tried to stay with the asymmetrical theme.:)
5. Hang your work of art and be proud. Every time I walk into this room, it makes me happy. Such a simple piece of art in both the way it was created and the way that it now looks in its place.
I gotta say, I LOVE following the Cutting Edge Stencil blog and get so many wonderful ideas from them. Put it on that must follow list!

I love the cats and the cheetah print!
Since I like simplistic and am working on a nursery right now… and I am trying for gender neutral… as much as I love the Lily Scroll Allover stencil I would have to go with the more general Chevron Allover Stencil. I just really like a lot of them!!
