Earlier this summer, I read an article, “Happiness is Contagious”. While this study was geared toward heart health, the message was consistent. Be happy and make others happy too. It spreads like wildfire, even to people you don’t know.
If you’ve ever been the receiver of a kind act, I am sure you have felt the desire to pass it on. It is just one of those things. When Ben and I went on our honeymoon to Ireland over 10 years ago, we were out to dinner one evening. We were enjoying a nice conversation in this pub that was totally empty with the exception of one other couple. About halfway through our dinner this couple struck up a conversation with us and we got to talking about our travels. Later on the couple left and Ben and I went to pay for our check. Only we didn’t have one. That couple paid for it and had given the message of, “Many happy years, enjoy your travels.”.
Not only did that couple pass on the happiness that evening but for the (almost) 11 years following. Ben and I talk about that moment and constantly share ways in which we can pass it on. We scheme often and talk about sharing goodness.

I teach them it is better to give then receive. To help those that are sick and hungry. we are all respnosible #sharegoodness
That is wonderful advice Nicole!
I teach my children to share the goodness every day in little ways with people and then we try to incorporate helping others on a larger scale throughout the year.

A wonderful thing to do Sarah!
I teach them to be kind - starting with each other! I do this by highly praising any time they do something for each other. You know, with siblings that can be rare.

Oh yes, I hear ya loud and clear;)
I HAVE to tell you my Zoe’s story. Last summer it was 100 degrees and I was shopping with Abby. She was so cranky and started to cry that she wanted water. We were next door to Zoes and I went and asked if I could have a small cup so i could get at little water from their dispenser. The manager saw Abby and handed us two bottles of water and a cookie and REFUSED to let me pay for it. I’ll never forget that kindness! We’ve eat at Zoe’s every time we’re in Collegeville now, I love to support businesses that treat customers so kindly. It was also a great thing for my daughter to see.

This is an amazing story Carrie! I love it! It proves exactly why they should be having this contest. Thank you SO much for sharing!
You know, I don’t consciously do this with my kids. I try to be a good person- holding the door for the person behind me, picking up something someone dropped and giving it back to them, helping neighbors, volunteering in the community….. I hope that my actions are teaching them, but I will start to point it out just to make sure.

Your actions are most definitely teaching them I am sure! We try to talk about it too to extend it but honestly, actions always speak much louder than words.
I know how I learned from my parents, they would often involve us kids, and so I have found that by having kids participate with you, whether it is visiting shut ins, making a meal and bringing it, it is something they feel is good and see how much it means to people.
You are so right. Even the smallest gesture can mean the world to someone else. Thanks for sharing Rosie!
My son hosts an Alex’s Lemonade Stand each June. Through it, he has learned about how he is helping researchers find a cure for cancer. It first started out as a regular stand for his own benefit three years ago, but once we learned about Alex and read her story he decided he wanted to give his money to the foundation. We continue to add to his generous spirit through the year by talking about others in need. He loves donating food to our church’s food pantry too.
