We closed two weeks ago today.
When we bought this home, we knew that the owners had been living down on the Cape for a while. When we did the walk through we found that it may have been longer than we originally thought. Homes that haven’t been lived in for a while generally have things “pop up”.
We had the benefit of living in the apartment for the first week while we cleaned the house and got it ready for the moving van to come.
So. We cleaned. And cleaned. And cleaned some more. There was a coal stove that was used as their primary source of heat. Coal = Soot.
The laundry room was one of the last to be tackled. As we checked that one out, we realized that the both the washing machine and the dryer needed to be replaced. On the positive…two new appliances. The negative…we were not expecting to replace them.
And then there was the fridge. The freezer wasn’t working. Perfect. So for now we have a freezer in the garage. We’re on the lookout for a new refrigerator. I got some pretty awesome comments/suggestions on the FB page about what people do and don’t like theirs!
The relief began when we painted our room. We went from this:
The trim..it was deep shade of teal. 3 coats later it was fresh white.
Nothing feels better than a fresh coat of paint - Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, white trim, new white switches, and a fresh painted ceiling in a room! We just need to get an extension ladder (thankfully our realtor lent us her A frame ladders so we could paint;) to cut in on the very top of the ceiling and then to decorate.
I also recruited some help to paint the trim in the closet.
G and H’s room was next. This room had blue trim and peach walls.
It took G and I 2 hours in Sherwin Williams before we decided on a color. He wanted bright orange. I thought maybe we could compromise.
So we ended up going with S Blue and Orange accents. My dad tackled this room, trim and all.
My dad made G these awesome shape shelves. We’ll be painting them one weekend coming up and then I’ll share! For now, it’s cozy.
I can’t wait to decorate and get to finishing up the rooms.
On the agenda for this week…
- Unpack - focus on our bedroom and the living room
- Paint the laundry room
- Paint G’s shelves

Love the new color in your room! What a difference a coat of paint makes. Things always seem to “pop” up when you move. Hopefully things settle down soon, but making a house your own is so much fun. We are in the process of doing that in our house now. Slowly painting and stripping wallpaper, and buying furniture/decorating but it is fun to make choices that fit you instead of the former owners. It makes it home.
Yes, so true Rach! Stripping wallpaper! Gotta love it;)
Painting is on my agenda this school year. We desperately need a fresh coat in so many of the rooms in our house. Looks like you guys are off to a good start.
