Week #2 – Our Winter CSA

So, this Tuesday, I picked up our second week’s share of our winter CSA. Of course, it was on the day where the snow was pouring down. I expected the roads to be terrible heading up to the farm, but the country roads were plowed and salted while ours were not at all. Go figure…a pleasant surprise!

I pulled up, hopped out, and picked up our box. In it was:

  1. Purple cabbage
  2. Brussels Sprouts (did you know there was an S on the end of Brussels? I totally didn’t!)
  3. Jerusalem artichokes (a.k.a.”sunchokes”)
  4. Rainbow radishes
  5. Mesclun mix

I am always pleasantly surprised when there are vegetables that I have never heard of or never cooked with before in these shares. It is fun to do a scavenger hunt of sorts for some new recipes. The weekends these days are a time when I test them out and store some of the veggies. Here is my plan for this weekend and the delicious produce:

  • Let’s start with the mesclun mix that is pretty much gone in my fridge. I have been having the most DELICIOUS salads all week with it. There is nothing better. Honestly, it is my favorite treat and I am hoping that the 5 greenhouses that Eckerton has keep producing mesclun mix all.winter.long!
  • As for the Brussels sprouts…Jo-Lynne Shane over at Musings of a Housewife posted this recipe for Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon a while back and I have been eyeing it up ever since. It sounds perfect for my family to test our Brussels sprouts! Bacon makes everything taste better, right?
  • The “sunchokes” look a lot like potatoes and I am going to treat it as one. I make these roasted potato slices that are to die for and my family loves them. I plan on slicing and roasting the “sunchokes” the same way with some sweet potatoes and rosemary from last weeks share and rainbow radishes from this week mixed in. Maybe the kids and husband won’t even notice;) Or maybe they will be pleasantly surprised!
  • As for the cabbage, I have been cutting some up and putting it in my salads this week. I may try to make some sort of coleslaw this weekend too.
