7 Tips For The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is a holiday in the Blakesley household. A huge one. Chocolate chip cookie baking has gone on for generations here. There is a legacy to live up to as a pro chocolate chip cookie maker. It all started with Ben’s dad (though many would disagree and say that there were others before or at the same time as him). His dad made the.best. chocolate chip cookies ever (and still arguably does) when we were in high school and all the way up until Ben started making them on his own.

The times changed in about 2006. We had just moved into our new home and had a baby. Ben was working from home as a recording engineer and had some time to perfect his chocolate chip cookie recipe. And that he did. Now listen, I am a good cook and baker, but this man bakes a mean chocolate chip cookie. Holy Moly they are good.

So, in honor of this year’s National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, I am sharing with you some of the tips from the best. The best!

7 Tips For The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

1. Butter 

Just recently, Ben has started using Kerrygold butter for the fat in the recipe. He will tell you that this change made the most amazing positive difference and now he will never go back. Nothing beats a good quality butter.

2. Hand Mix

Mix the dough with a wooden spoon. No ifs, ands, or buts, and definitely NO hand mixer!!!

3. Reasonable Amounts of Dough

You can’t make those cookies too big or too small. They need to be about 1 1/2 rounded Tbsp on the cookie sheet. And no, we don’t measure.

4. Don’t Overbake

Come on, a little underdone is key. The perfect cookie is just slightly crispy on the outside but soft and chewy in the middle! Pull them out just before they look ready.

5. Soften the Butter

That does not mean melt. I repeat, do not make the butter into a liquid!

6. Vanilla – 2 Times

Yep, just add it in there, twice as much!

7. Definitely Taste The Dough! 

Just don’t double dip;)

  1. I’m laughing over double vanilla, it was a running joke in an episode of The Michael J. Fox show, where he gets lured by a sexy neighbor how bakes and the wife mocks the cookies for “too vanilla.” Too bad they cancelled it! But ok, I will try it next time!

    • Haha! All right, here’s my answer Gayla…BB’s fudge is def. better. And my Blakesley man’s cookies rock this house! Brownies? Eh. Mama H’s caramel brownies are the bomb! But you are right, these guys are pretty awesome:) And that vanilla and egg trick…I NEED to try it!! Love that you commented!
