Summer CSA Adventures {Locavore Living Link-Up} May 29th, 2013

Man, it is hot out there today! I am hoping that all of my wonderful little patio plants really start taking off this week with what looks to be the first real consistent weather we have had all spring. Maybe we are in the clear as far as the cold goes. Reason #452 to have take part in a CSA: When your experiments in your garden fail, no worries, you still have lots of delicious fruits and veggies to back them up! No failures here…yet, but still lots of delicious veggies!

Last week was a pretty large success on the produce front. A few great recipes came out of the share! With the rhubarb from last week, I made Strawberry Rhubarb Muffins that were a huge hit and actually, I just picked up more rhubarb from a farm stand yesterday to make another batch!

My family enjoyed a few side salads at dinner. We have determined that the Asian Sesame dressing is not a hit for everyone and so onto another this week. BUT, everyone has eaten their fair share of salad and G has especially enjoyed them. We had so much lettuce last week (even after splitting our share) that in anticipation of more this week, I headed over to our neighbors to share the wealth. They were especially grateful for the mixed baby lettuce heads!

I am still sitting on the Indian Mustard. I have some steak that I want to defrost and so I am thinking of working it into a side for that dish. Everything I have read lends to this variety of mustard having a kick, so we will try it!

Kale =Smoothies for us this week and they were delicious! We can’t wait for PYO strawberries to open this year so that we can restock our freezer with more of this frozen fruit.

Collards – I still have yet to use these but am thinking of making them the old fashioned way this week, maybe even with some bacon:)

This weeks pick-up was crazy hot. The kids and I had a nice time chatting in the barn and touring our share for this week. Everyone helped put the veggies in our bag. We picked up for a few other people as well and so there was a lot of work to be done!

The Breakdown:

Asparagus: We are making an app with this one and man have I got the recipe for you! Stay tuned:)

Rainbow Chard: Honestly excited about this one. It has been a while since we have had it. I will have to turn to this list to decide what to make. Possibly some pesto?

Curly Kale: Smoothies…more smoothies. Though I will say, I do miss the spinach in them. There is a bit of a different taste.

Flashy Trout Back Lettuce: Sounds intriguing!

Mesclun Mix, Mixed Lettuce Heads and Butterhead Lettuce: I’ll be making lettuce wraps with the butterhead for sure oh and of course salads galore with the rest!

Kohlrabi: A reader mentioned scalloped kholrabi a few weeks ago and I am in!

Strawberries: Here’s hoping they make it home this time…

Oh and next week…Feta made with goat’s milk from Briarwood Croft Farm. Need I say more?

  1. Man, this post is making me so sad I didn’t do my CSA again this year! I missed the deadline and didn’t think much about it but now seeing these posts I totally regret it. I was totally into the beginning of the summer and making all sorts of fun things out of Rhubarb too!

Enjoy! We love kale too. Our CSA is how we discovered it – big fans of Kale chips :)
