Pass On That Purple Purse…October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The idea of women living behind closed doors that feel like there is no way out of the abusive relationship that they are in makes me sick to my stomach. Whether it is emotional or physical abuse, it is abuse and not a single person on this earth deserves it. Yet, there are women in all of our communities that are suffering through it. Imagine fearing for your safety or worse, your child’s safety. Imagine feeling like this is it and there is no other way?

There are things that we all can do to begin to put a stop to this control that abusers have. 1 in every 4 women are affected by domestic violence. That is a staggering statistic that needs to end.

Start by “Passing the Purple Purse”. For every purple purse passed, the Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to the YWCA, an organization with a strong focus on empowering women and putting a stop to domestic violence. As I write this post, the Allstate Foundation has donated over $300,000 to the YWCA from this campaign. Keep the ticker going and help out.

Here is my virtual purse code:

Enter the number in and start talking. PurplePurse.com was designed to get people talking about domestic violence. The more that we as community members and possibly friends of victims can recognize, the more we may be able to help. Did you know that financial abuse can occur to and has been occurring with much more frequency since the economic downturn. “Research shows that the #1 reason that victims remain in relationships with their abusers is that they lack the financial knowledge and resources to break free”. Help put an end to this! The YWCA helps get these women the information and education needed to make freedom a possibility.

I received a purple purse in the mail, registered my code, and passed it on. Now you can do it too!

Follow along on Twitter (@clicktoempower) using the hashtag #PurplePurse and on Facebook. Become a part of this change!
