National Kid Inventors’ Day – The Reach-inator

I have some pretty creative kiddos and apparently, some pretty inventive ones too. When I saw this date come across in my Family Fun magazine last month, I knew we had to celebrate it!

I shared the concept behind National Kid Inventor’s Day with C and G, and they were just as excited as I was. They knew exactly what they wanted to do. We set aside some time on Sunday to work on their invention. It is one that they have been talking about for a while now!

Off we went, inventing…

C and G made a drawing of their invention. Before putting marker to paper, they locked down the details with each other to make sure it was exactly what they were after. Like I said, they have been talking about and describing this invention for months. They were really excited to actually be able to make it. So, when it came time to draw it, they were on it and knew exactly what they wanted!

The next step was to make a list of our supplies and head out to buy it/use what we had.

Here is what was on their list:

2 pulleys

30 ft. of rope

duct tape (with a pattern of course)

a basket

a clothespin

2 Command hooks

C had just made a few index card baskets for her dad and I, so we used one of those, and we had a clothespin and duct tape around the house. The pulleys, rope, and command hooks, we had to buy from Lowes.

The story behind the Reach-inator:

Ever since H was born, C has spent her travel time in the third row of the minivan. When we are driving in the car, it is impossible for me to reach back to her when she needs something and even when I am passenger I often have to unbuckle myself to jump back there and hand things to her (TOTALLY unsafe!).

So…one road trip, they decided that there should be a system for us to be able to transport things back to them without being distracted.

The creation of the Reach-inator:

After gathering all of the supplies, we headed out to the minivan to develop this fantastic invention. The kids could not have been more excited! A different kind of excited than say, Christmas, it was a really proud excited. They kept saying over and over, “We’re real inventors!” and “We invent stuff!”

And so, the Reach-inator was created. And it works perfectly!

My kids are happy, not only because they now have a really cool pulley system in the car to use when someone needs a tissue and it is an “emergency”, but also because they are so proud of themselves for this invention!

I can’t wait to see what some of the other up and coming inventors have in store for us!

  2. That’s really neat! Each spring, our school does an invention fair instead of a science fair, and I’m proud of the work my daughter has done – relevant and useful projects that have meaning for her. Great stuff!
