14 Must Have Tips for Traveling to Great Wolf Lodge

So we just came back from a fantastic yet totally overwhelming (in a really good way) trip to Great Wolf Lodge New England. Read our adventures HERE.

I am thrilled that we went and that my kids had the opportuntiy to experience this. Seriously, it was non stop from the time we arrived on Friday evening (around 4) until the time we left on Saturday afternoon (around 3:30). Jam packed with fun. And honestly we didn’t even get to half of the things we could have done. Oh well, we’ll save that for the next time. 😉 I tried to take notes and be very observant while we were there so that I could share some of my MUST HAVE tips for traveling to Great Wolf Lodge.

I’d love to hear yours too so feel free to leave a comment!

Here are my 14 tips – in no particular order!

1. Be prepared to be exhausted.
From the moment you arrive, you will be on the go. We were AMAZED at the sheer number of things to do. Of course, you expect water slides – that’s most likely why you made your reservation. But did you expect the bowling alley, miniature golf course, arcade, rope climbing course, rides, and spa? Like I said, exhausted. A good exhausted, just be prepared. :)

2. You can check in early.
We {kind of} knew this when we went but we didn’t take advantage of it. Looking back at #1, I wish we had. It is almost like a whole extra day! You can’t get into your room until the afternoon, you can start using the waterpark and other facilities early starting at 1:00 p.m. on your check-in day. Score!

3. Take advantage of the Forest Friends Show and Story Time.
Each night at Great Wolf Lodge, there is a story read by a number of adorable and funny animated characters. The story ends with and appearance from Wiley – picture time! It is a great way for the kiddos to wind down at the end of the day. Since there is so much activity all the time, this is much needed!

4. Eat a good breakfast.
You will need your energy for the day! We ate the Breakfast Buffet in Lodge the Wood Fired Grill while we were there and it was a favorite. Made to order omelets, oatmeal (my fav!), bacon, fresh fruit, waffles, and french toast. There is something for everyone! There is also a Dunkin Donuts in the resort too if you don’t want a sit down breakfast.

5. Get a waterproof cover for your phone.
Guaranteed you will want to take TONS of pictures and getting shots while going DOWN the slides is encouraged. You can find one of these cases at the resort in the gift shop or here is a good one too.

6. No need to bring towels or flotation devices.
Everything is provided for you there. There are plenty of life jacket sizes. In fact, you can’t use your own. And towels are provided in the water park as well (less laundry for you to do at home!)

7. Redeem your free Shutterfly book while at the resort.
At least when we went, there was a card on our hotel room table with a promo code for a FREE Shutterfly Great Wolf Lodge Photo Book. You don’t need to actually put it together but at least enter the code provided so that you can create your personalized Great Wolf Lodge photo book for free at a later date! I just finished creating ours.

8. Wear your wolf ears, your kids will thank you.
Come on, you need one fun family pic! And you know you want to wear them.

9. Look into specials and Howlidays before you go.
Great Wolf Lodge runs many promotions throughout the year. Be prepared for them. Read my post here about the ones that are happening between October and December. And keep your eye out for others during other times.

10. Get a plan together for checkout.
A wise friend (Diane from Dollops of Diane) once told me her plan for check out day and it was the best ever. You pack up all of your stuff first thing in the morning. Make sure you have two extra bags. One will hold anything you may need for the water park during the day. The other will hold your change of clothes. Take everything out of your room and put it in your car (except the day bag you packed). The one with the change of clothes put on the front seat of the car until the end of the day. This way you avoid a late checkout!

11. Tell the chef at each dining spot about any allergies you may have.
Great Wolf Lodge is a nut free facility. Nothing that they make on site contains nuts. The chef will come out and talk to you about allergies or potential cross contamination including foods that come from elsewhere to the resort. In my experience they were extremely knowledgeable and I was super impressed.

12. Make sure to get measured at the Safety Stop at the door to the waterpark.
A lifeguard will measure each child and give them a wristband according to their heights and the rides that they are able to go on.

13. Bring sneakers!
In order to do the ropes course (included with your admission to Great Wolf Lodge), you have to have sneakers to participate. There are two courses – one low to the ground for the littles and one up high for the bigs.

14. Order the pizza beforehand.
Before you know it lunchtime will be here and you’ll have a few starving kiddos on your hands. The pizza place, Hungry as a Wolf, is located right in the arcade and you can order a pizza for pickup anytime. I highly recommend the BBQ Chicken. It was delish!

Now, go enjoy Great Wolf Lodge!!

  3. We stayed at the PA Great Wolf Lodge this past summer for a night. It was amazing! We brought an underwater camera with us and my son taught himself to swim underwater while there so he could take underwater pics and videos. He was always afraid of getting his face wet, but something about that place made him so comfortable. We were ecstatic for him! A tip that worked for us: I purchased a paw pass for my son when I booked our room. It got him a bunch of amenities, including snacks, a stuffed animal, and a Magiquest game and wand, all at a discount. It made the experience even more fun. We were able to check in at 12:45 and get in our room immediately too! My son still talks about wanting to go back there again!

  5. We had a great visit to Great Wolf Lodge this summer. I loved the breakfast buffet too – the omelettes were so good! One tip I would add is to bring your own snacks. We didn’t find healthy snack options at the shops, and you can save a few bucks by bringing your own. They have refrigerators in the rooms, which is a big plus!

  6. Yay that Great Wolf Lodge has come to MA! We visited earlier this summer for a media event and #1 is so true – its utterly exhausting!!! But so fun and worth the trip to Fitchburg. I actually thought I wouldn’t like wearing the wolf ears, but it was pretty fun to have everyone wearing their ears all around the property!

  7. Sounds like so much fun! I know my kids would love it – I hope to get there this winter.

  8. Yes, the exhaustion! Which is definitely a good thing for the kids. Not so much for the parents! And I love that they let you enjoy the water park the day you check in, too!
